I swear, one day I'll get a legitimate lighting set up and an actual flash. But for now, I just make stuff up as I need it. This lamp has actually helped with a lot of the indoor shots that I take. Who knew it would've been so handy?

The Experimental College

If you're studying in Davis and looking for some time to fill in Spring quarter, I HIGHLY recommend checking out a few of the wonderful classes offered at the Davis Experimental College. It has courses taught be professionals ranging from firewalking to glass blowing to capoeira to first aid and tons of great other things. Check out the catalog they put out ever quarter and you may be surprised at what sounds interesting.
Try new things!
This shot was taken inside the experimental college registry office while the sun was shining through their library window and I was signing up for ecstatic dance, which you should all go to tonight.

The Phantom Bandanna
Looks a bit like a poltergeist, if I do say so myself. But yea, bandannas are the shit. I still think it is on of the most functional "accessories" you can own. I've had this red paisley one for a few years now and have since added to my collection. I think I have something ridiculous like 10 now haha.

Artificial Lighting
I recently did a post on natural lighting and the benefits that come with learning how to manipulate it to your pleasing. There is, however, another way to get dramatic lighting in your photos to work to your advantage. That, of course, is to simply create it yourself. Photographers have been coming up with tricks and techniques to create the lighting they want for years and years. Personally, I prefer natural lighting, but this'll do in a pinch.
Here is a shot of some dramatic sandwich making.

Natural Lighting
Lighting really is everything in photography. In fact, a lot of people call photography "l'art du lumière" or "the art of light." Once you learn to manipulate light and use what natural light is available, you really open up a lot of options. For instance, here is a pretty plain shot in subject matter. But I took advantage of the natural light in the situation to bring attention to the contrast in the shot as well as the texture of the wall.
